Hush: A Response to the Steubenville High School Rape Case

Carmel Chase’s powerful lyrics inspired by the Steubenville High School rape case and the abuse of women everywhere.

Hush

Woman, wipe that mascara off your cheeks

Hush

Why is it that you are all so weak?

Hush

Baby no one wants to see you cry

Hush

Don’t you know, we all prefer the lie?

Don’t nobody want to hear that word

Don’t nobody want to say that word

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see it’s real

Hush

Maybe baby you weren’t very clear

Hush

You didn’t say “no” loud enough to hear

Hush

Don’t just stand around here lookin lame

Hush

Get ready girl cuz you’re gonna take the blame

Don’t nobody want to hear that word

Don’t nobody want to say that word

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see it’s real

Hush

Haven’t you learned we don’t care how you feel?

Hush

You’re overreacting, this is no big deal

Hush

This isn’t something that should ever be talked about

Hush

We taught you to stay silent and not reach out

Don’t nobody want to hear that word

Don’t nobody want to say that word

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see it’s real

Hush

Little girl now you should feel ashamed

Hush

We both know that you were playin games

Hush

How can you even look us in the eye?

Hush

Don’t you know whores should be despised?

Don’t nobody want to hear that word

Don’t nobody want to say that word

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see it’s real

Hush

Remember that you agreed to go on this date

Hush

Babe, you changed your mind a little too late

Hush

If you didn’t want it, why’d you let him get to second base?

Hush

Admit it girl, now you’re just lyin’ to save face

Don’t nobody want to hear that word

Don’t nobody want to say that word

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see it’s real

Hush

Goddamn you sluts, you’re all the same

Hush

Goin’ ’round trashing good boy’s names

Hush

Maybe if you didn’t dress that way

Hush

We all heard that you’re an easy lay

Don’t nobody want to hear that word

Don’t nobody want to say that word

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see it’s real

Hush

You don’t matter to us-you’re no one

Hush

There’s plenty more where you come from

Hush

Maybe he got a little rough with you, but hey

Hush

“Boys will be boys”-as they say

Don’t nobody want to hear that word

Don’t nobody want to say that word

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see it’s real

Hush

Cover up them bruises on your neck

Hush

Baby, haven’t you stopped crying yet?

Hush

Wipe away the bloodstains on your dress

Hush

Wash away everything that he left

Don’t nobody want to hear that word

Don’t nobody want to say that word

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to see

Don’t nobody want to know that it’s real

Angry, shocked, overwhelmed? Take action: Support independent media.

We’ve borne witness to a chaotic first few months in Trump’s presidency.

Over the last months, each executive order has delivered shock and bewilderment — a core part of a strategy to make the right-wing turn feel inevitable and overwhelming. But, as organizer Sandra Avalos implored us to remember in Truthout last November, “Together, we are more powerful than Trump.”

Indeed, the Trump administration is pushing through executive orders, but — as we’ve reported at Truthout — many are in legal limbo and face court challenges from unions and civil rights groups. Efforts to quash anti-racist teaching and DEI programs are stalled by education faculty, staff, and students refusing to comply. And communities across the country are coming together to raise the alarm on ICE raids, inform neighbors of their civil rights, and protect each other in moving shows of solidarity.

It will be a long fight ahead. And as nonprofit movement media, Truthout plans to be there documenting and uplifting resistance.
