Darren Barany

Darren Barany is a professor of sociology at LaGuardia Community College and lives in Queens, New York. His forthcoming book, The New Welfare Consensus: Ideological, Political, and Social Origins explores the role of intellectuals and interest groups in shaping US welfare reform discourse from the inter-war period to the 1996 welfare reform bill. Specifically, it clarifies the theoretical origins of US anti-welfarism and chronicles the necessary conditions and key players which helped shape the political culture in the US to make it exceptional among major nations in relation to the limited scope of the safety net.
