Thirty-five people were killed and 28 others were wounded Tuesday in a twin explosion in Taji, a town 20 kilometers to the north of the Iraqi capital.
Iraqi security forces said a parked car bomb detonated around 10 am near the government identity-cards office and local town council hall. The car explosion was followed a bomb detonation at the same place and time.
The explosions took place during the peak hour when people come to the two buildings for official business.

The speaker of the Iraqi parliament, Usama al-Nujaifi, condemned the attacks and urged security forces to do a better job of protecting the people in the wake of recent violence against government institutions.
In a press release, al-Nujaifi demanded that security forces reveal the outcome of an investigation into previous attacks.

An urgent appeal for your support: 72 Hours to raise $24,000
Truthout relies on individual donations to publish independent journalism, free from political and corporate influence. In fact, we’re almost entirely funded by readers like you.
Unfortunately, donations are down. At a moment when independent journalism is urgently needed, we are struggling to meet our operational costs due to increasing political censorship.
Truthout may end this month in the red without additional help, so we’ve launched a fundraiser. We have 72 hours to hit our $24,000 goal. Please make a tax-deductible one-time or monthly donation if you can.
