This edition of Ladydrawers, by Sarah Becan and Anne Elizabeth Moore, answers the question on everyone’s mind: Who, exactly, keeps our media so homogeneous? The answer – and the response it demands – will surprise you. It’s a follow up to our last strip, on creator data, as well as our findings on submission rates by gender. But Ladydrawers is going in a new direction. We’ve proven that a crippling gender bias exists in comics, chronicled harassment, tracked problematic new initiatives in the form, and seen how these problems are rooted in other media and our culture at large. In future strips, we’ll start looking closely at the social issues that so often get misstated in media – and the problematic policies that can result from media misrepresentation. To get ready to go in this new direction, we’re going to take December off – but we’ll be back in action to face 2013. Too early to call it “The Year of the Ladydrawers?” We’ll see you then!
P.S. We here at Ladydrawers HQ were saddened by Todd Akin’s defeat in the Senate race by incumbent Claire McCaskill, but thrilled that he’ll finally have some time to figure out how women’s bodies really work. Luckily he already has all the resources he needs!
