Christen A. Smith is assistant professor of African and African diaspora studies and anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin. Her forthcoming book, Afro-Paradise: The Black Body, Violence and Performance in Brazil, analyzes anti-black state violence and the black Brazilian community’s response to it.
