The Washington Post and the Associated Press, citing Democratic sources, say that Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter will not seek a second term this year.

While thought to be favored for re-election over former Rep. Scott McInnis (R), Ritter has made some enemies in the party, notably his decision to pick Michael Bennet to fill the Senate seat vacated by now Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. Former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, who thought he was going to get the Senate appointment, never hid his anger over the rejection. At first he considered challenging Ritter for the governorship, then decided to run against Bennet. Ritter’s retirement may mean that Romanoff will once again focus on the gubernatorial race….
A majority of the governorships at stake this year will be open, but mostly due to term limits. Of all the incumbents leaving office this year, only five are voluntarily retiring, in addition to Ritter: Jody Rell (R-CT), Mark Parkinson (D-KS), Tim Pawlenty (R-MN), Jim Douglas (R-VT), Jim Doyle (D-WI). Also, Charlie Crist (R-FL) is running for the Senate.

Trump is silencing political dissent. We appeal for your support.

Progressive nonprofits are the latest target caught in Trump’s crosshairs. With the aim of eliminating political opposition, Trump and his sycophants are working to curb government funding, constrain private foundations, and even cut tax-exempt status from organizations he dislikes.

We’re concerned, because Truthout is not immune to such bad-faith attacks.

We can only resist Trump’s attacks by cultivating a strong base of support. The right-wing mediasphere is funded comfortably by billionaire owners and venture capitalist philanthropists. At Truthout, we have you.

Truthout has launched a fundraiser, and we have only 72 hours left to raise $25,000. Please take a meaningful action in the fight against authoritarianism: make a one-time or monthly donation to Truthout. If you have the means, please dig deep.
