Truthout is pleased to bring a weekly posting of short videos for middle school aged kids – and everyone else – about climate change and its effects. “The Green Ninja,” a character created by a climate scientist and his team, provides an entertaining and educational way to help children grasp the intricacies of climate change and learn what they can personally do to become involved in fighting it. See additional details about the series or head straight to this week’s episode “Save the Fishes.”Meet some of the students from the Redwood Academy of Leadership and hear their rap about keeping the water clean for ourselves and the fish!
What’s one of the most crucial environmental problems concerning both fresh water and the oceans? Plastic, of course – the sea is filled with it and plenty of plastic waste also finds its way into therivers, local steams and waterways of the world. Comprised of fossil fuels like petroleum, a non-renewable resource, plastic is not biodegradable and makes up the majority of the floating waste. Furthermore, it poses a major health hazard to humans and animals since harmful chemicals found in plastic can be leeched into the water.
